What's the point? Unions at one time were useful. But everything that unions fought for have turned into federal and state law. So really, besides shifting the power from management to the employees, what is the purpose of a union?
Higher Wages? From a government entity? Why? Your 'workers rights'?
It's easy. Here's the company, the position, your responsibilities. They tell you what they are willing to pay you, your benefits, vacation time, etc. Your workers rights are simple - accept the job or decline the job.
So what happens when your financial situation changes and you need more money? Is it fair to break your contract with the organization that hired you through collective bargaining? Is that what you call your 'workers rights'?
Here are your rights as a citizen. You can talk to your boss and ask for a raise, or even some overtime to help you out. If you don't get what you want, you can either keep your job at your previously agreed to compensation, or quit and find another job that meets your new financial obligations.
Disagree?
As the other brother, I do not disagree, though I'm sure there will be times we do. On this though, no way. I find it interesting, when I get into "debates" with people about this topic, that all these "rights" come up. What is with the explosion of rights all of a sudden. Recently, this phrase has taken on life among the left and their darlings and parrots. All of a sudden everything is a right, the right to free healthcare, the right to a job, the right to housing and a car, etc. These are not rights! They are earned goods. There is a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of hard work and earning things on your own has been lost among many in this country, predominantly on the left, but also on the right too. I notice this in my class, as I am a college student. There is no work ethic in these kids I have class with. They look for a result and go after it without regard to how to get there. They don't put in the effort and time to really learn material and get it so they can do well later on. The tests come back, and at least half of them fail it, some miserably, and then they laugh about it, as if mediocrity and sub-par performance is amusing. I don't understand that.
I do think it is related to this though. There is no desire to work hard and earn things for yourself and stand on your own two feet anymore. There's no ambition or drive to be better among many around us. Take away the incentive for doing those things, such as getting a better car, getting a better house, having a better health plan, and the people become lazy and apathetic. The things they are now declaring as rights are not rights. This is not the USSR, which in their constitution, you know, before it failed miserably, had the kind of rights that are now being promoted by the left, moving toward a more socialistic/communistic style country or government.
